Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and hope you are all ready for some fun and games on the Pond and the River this year!
Our aim here at the RBYC is to provide a general introduction to the water, whereby our youngster will become 'sailors for life'.
We generally run sessions every other Sunday. This might be on the pond or racing on the river or training on the river. And then - Cadet Week (this year 19-24 August) - which is the highlight of our sailing year.

Although our sailors are a little more relaxed that the potential Ben Ainslies of this world, some of them progress to great things afloat. Our aim is ensure they really enjoy the experience and to this end, they embrace the social side of sailing as well as the on-water activities, as do their parents! If they want to take racing seriously, they may end up joining other clubs as well, and then possibly on to the next level, wherever that takes them! Historically, we find a lot of our ex-Cadets end up crewing on keelboats and with a passion for the sport that can often open doors anywhere in the world! Three of our ex-Cadets are Atlantic rowers and there is little doubt that their passion for the water started here at the RBYC.

You will find our provisional programme here as well as on the new and improved RBYC website

You will see RB Cadet events including an Easter Egg Hunt, the Clare Series and the Hooper Cup (racing for both seniors and juniors, where we encourage younger children with coached races, adults or older Cadets with a younger crew, basically anyone else who would like to join in). Pond Sundays are on the calendar - we have also training sessions on the river.

The river training is open to our members only, and although there are opportunities to join in with our Pond sessions as non-members, we look long-term to encourage those who wish to part take in the training to become members. However, we have set a non-members pond rate for those who would like to come along and see what we do. The Clare and the Hooper Series are open to all. Watch this space for further details.

Pond Sundays are open to all those aged 10 and under at the farmer's pond over at Boro’ Waters (Ratsborough Farm), between Burnham and Southminster – perfect for a gentle introduction. Children are coached from kayaks until they are confident enough to sail around a course on their own.
Any adult volunteers on the pond or the river are always gratefully enlisted – we really do have a fun time and it’s such a rewarding job to watch the children progress and their confidence fly. This year, we are looking forward to guest appearances on the pond from the Rock Stars of the RBOD and RS Elite fleets… who have kindly offered their precious time to help coach our youngest members. What they don’t know isn’t worth knowing, so these pond dates are unmissable. And we are always delighted to see our past and senior Cadets coming back to the pond to show the little ones how it’s done.

First bookings go to members, so it’s a good reason for non-members to sign up – with memberships starting at less than £35 per month (see the end of this newsletter for more details on membership) - what’s not to love? Sailing for the kids, the chance to jump on a boat on the river for their designated parent, and a rather nice bar and restaurant to boot… Please do book in for any event - and help us make the best arrangements for you in advance.

This year we will be having a Cadet camp out at Boro’ Waters – an overnight feast of tenting loveliness followed by a day on the pond on the Sunday (23rd July). We are waiting for the cost of pitches – but this is a date for everyone’s diary! We’d love the senior Cadets to come and join the juniors and show them how it’s done!

The weekend of 8th and 9th July, plans are coming together for our inaugural Secret Water cruise. The plan is to set off in a multitude of craft for an Arthur Ransome-style adventure - a lesson in exploring our tidal creeks and having jolly good fun (and lashings of ginger beer!).

Cadet Week is a phenomenal week (this year, Saturday 19th to Thursday 24th August), and we pride ourselves on making it fun for the whole family, from the smallest child, teenagers, the parents, godparents, aunts and uncles through to the grandparents. It embraces social and sailing activities at lots of levels, and we welcome non-members from visiting clubs.

For those who’d like more information on joining the RBYC, our Cadet membership fits into two categories: mini Cadet (0 to 10 years) and Cadet (11 to 17 years). The subscription for a Cadet is £75 per year, and a mini Cadets is free of charge, however, our Club rules mean that we would expect the parent or guardian who proposes the child for membership to be responsible for them at the club, and this parent or guardian MUST be a full member of the club. The subscription for full member is £34.75 per month from 1st April 2017.

We have two club Optimists available for members use on the river and six Optimists for use on the pond. For details of the condition of use for the river optimists please see Conditions for Use of RBYC Cadets' club boats on the river document.
