Sea School - Powerboat Level 2


This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

Please read the notes below in preparation for your course.

The Royal Burnham Yacht Club is based on The Quay, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, CM0 8AU

However the entrance to the car park can be found on the High St, Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex, CM0 8AH just past the golden dragon restaurant.

Previous Knowledge/Experience

None essential but some boating experience is desirable. Some prior reading recommended if you have time. We do offer a Level 1 powerboat course if you would prefer to gain some knowledge before doing your level 2.


12 years old. Candidates under the age of 16 will have their certificate endorsed.

Achievement (certificate awarded and ability after the course)

You will acquire the RYA level 2 Powerboat certificate

Please note if you are taking this course and intend to apply for an ICC, a coastal Powerboat Level 2 course will allow you to apply for a coastal ICC for Power up to 10m providing you have also successfully passed a CEVNI test. For more information and to check the eligibility criteria please refer to the ICC application form on the RYA website.

What’s included

RYA Powerboat Logbook, loan of lifejacket if you do not have your own. Tea coffee and water is included however food is not. The yacht club has a fantastic menu if you would like to get a meal or bar snacks please enquire at the time of booking.

What will I need to bring?

Warm clothing- even if it is a warm day it can get cold when travelling at planning speed.

Waterproof Jacket and trousers

Sunscreen and hat if it is sunny

Notebook and pen

A passport size photo for your certificate

Course Structures:

This course will be run over 2 days from 0900hrs till 1700hrs both days. Please note that the cost of the course does not include refreshments.

We will have lunch at the Royal Burnham Yacht club on the first day. We have an extensive menu for you to enjoy at an extra cost. Please enquire at time of booking.

On day 2 we will potentially have lunch at one of a number of other locations as part of passage planning. This will be weather dependant and discussed on the morning of day 1 to ensure you are prepared for your course.

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, Launching and recovery, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, and collision regulations. The course will be taken on coastal waters and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
